How an industrial air barrier works

The result depends on directing the right air stream across the actual opening. Door dimensions alone cannot determine the system.

01

A directed air stream across the opening

Temperature differences, wind and building pressure create natural airflow at an open door. The system counters some of this movement with an engineered air stream. Forklifts, vehicles and people can continue through the open passage.

The fan unit sits above the door and supplies outlet columns on both sides via connecting ducts. The air exits laterally across the doorway. This differs from a common overhead curtain that blows straight down.

  • Fan unit above the opening
  • Vertical side outlet columns
  • Air stream directed across the full door height
02

Why the design matters

If the stream is too weak, it may not cross the opening effectively. Incorrect direction or excess airflow can create turbulence and waste electricity. We assess the actual pressure and airflow conditions with arwus before choosing a configuration.

  • Door width, height and mounting space
  • Indoor and outdoor temperatures
  • Wind exposure and building pressure
  • Operating hours and vehicle movements

Retrofitting an existing door

Many existing industrial doors can be considered for retrofit. Mounting surfaces, clearance above and beside the door, power supply and obstructions need to be checked first. The system is individually manufactured by arwus in Chemnitz, Germany.

Assess special requirements separately

The air barrier complements, but does not replace, prescribed process ventilation or the safety design of controlled zones. Explosive atmospheres, cleanroom requirements and other regulated areas require specific engineering review and applicable approvals.
